Review: Ahava Active Moisture Gel Cream

Finding a good moisturiser for day time use is important! Hydration benefits all skin types and is essential if we want our skin to function well. I recently got my hands on Ahava’s Active Moisture Gel Cream and I have been using it for a few weeks now. So is this a goodie?

The first thing you might notice about this moisturiser is that it is called a ‘gel cream’. It has a similar texture to Biotherm’s Aquasource moisturiser if you remember it (they stopped selling Biotherm here in Aus btw, which is lame! Though you can find it online). It looks like a cream but it has that light, bouncy texture.

I was wondering of course how moisturising it would be – as Ahava says it will lock in moisture, as it strengthens the skin barrier to protect it from environmental aggressors. I can tell you, that it is very moisturising. What I love most is that a little cream goes a long way – so it’s very economical also. You can feel how moisturising it is upon application – skin feels plump and protected. It leaves a dewey layer of moisture on top of the skin, but it doesn’t feel oily or greasy. After a few minutes it turns velvety and I don’t find that it is shiny on my skin at all. If your skin is oily but dehydrated, this guy would be a saviour for you!

It definitely keeps your skin feeling moisturised all day. I have normal to oily skin, which can get on the drier side in winter and this cream still felt nourishing enough to use during the day. Ahava says that the cream has a unique delivery system called Moisture Suspension RE, which means that moisture is delivered deeper into the skin, reaching the epidermis. Perhaps this is what makes the skin feel so plump and moisturised! It definitely doesn’t feel like the moisturiser is just sitting on top of the skin (providing a solely occlusive barrier) that could be rubbed off.

The mineral composition of Dead Sea water makes it different to other sea waters (which is what Ahava is known for and hence it is used in every product!) as it doesn’t have an extremely high composition of sodium (salt). It also contains magnesium, calcium, potassium and bromide. From the ingredient list I can also see that it contains squalene, which is a substance found in our own natural sebum, so our bodies recognise this form of moisture and easily absorb it. It isn’t oily however – so great for oily and acne prone skin types. It also protects our cells from degradation, especially the type of degradation causes by UV rays (free radicals and peroxidation). No matter where you live, every type of UV protection and anti-radical protection is welcome, but this is even more important if you live in a sunny place like Australia (which has a massive ozone layer unfortunately *sobs*). Because squalene sits highly in the ingredient list, it’s anti-ageing capabilities should be great in this moisturiser! Glycerin is of course wonderful because it is an emollient, humectant and occlusive moisturiser. Dimethiconol is interesting, because as I recently learnt, it’s a silicone which fills in wrinkles and smooths out skin structure – but it still let’s other ingredients penetrate the skin. This of course preps the skin for makeup application, but also what makes the skin feel velvety and smooth. It’s also got some lovely soothing and anti-irritant ingredients like aloe vera and allantoin.

I will also mention that it has quite a strong scent – it’s kinda floral and oceany, so it’s a little bit of a different mix (trying to explain scents is hard!). It’s not the best scent ever and I wish it was more subtle, but I got used to it quite quickly.

I wouldn’t rely on this moisturiser to provide all of my anti-oxidant needs (still go for a vitamin C and E serum underneath your moisturiser) but as a moisturiser, this one is tops! I will be loving this one in summer. It retails for about $50 here in Aus (you can find it at Fresh Fragrances and Cosmetics and the provide free shipping which helps) and because it lasts for so long, I think the price is reasonable.
